Career and Technical Education
Penn Yan Academy has been approved by the New York State Department of Education to offer a Career & Technical Education (CTE) Diploma Endorsement to students participating in Agriculture, Business, Pre-Engineering, and Construction Technology. In addition to successfully completing all program requirements, students must:
● Complete a minimum of 22 credits
● Pass 5 required Regents exams or approved alternatives
● Successfully complete a 3-part technical assessment-written, demonstration, and project components
● Complete a Work-Based Learning (WBL) experience (see description below)
● Complete a work skills employability profile
Students who participate in CTE programs will follow a sequential course of study that will help students become aware of and acquire the foundation skills and competencies essential for success in post secondary institutions, the workplace and life.
Students enrolled in CTE programs will:
● Gain an awareness of career development opportunities
● Be able to apply academic concepts and relate school activities to future college and workforce requirements
● See the relevance of academic career work
● Develop technical & high performance work skills
● Have opportunities to earn scholarships & awards
● Have opportunities to earn college credit while in high school
● Gain real life work experiences & develop marketable skills
Work-Based Learning (Grades 11 or 12) ½ credit
Penn Yan Academy’s Work Based Learning Program is certified through the N.Y.S. Education Department as a General Education Work Experience Program (GEWEP - http://www.p12.nysed.gov/cte/wbl/ ). Students earn credit for real world experience to learn employment skills, as well as to help determine career areas of interest. Each student, with the assistance of the instructor, will be responsible for securing a work experience placement. The hours may be during school hours, after school hours, or even during the summer. The experience may be paid or voluntary. Students who complete 150 hours of work and fulfill the program requirements will receive ½ credit; 1 full credit will be awarded for the completion of 300 hours of work.
*Prerequisite: Successful completion of two credits of CTE courses required, three credits recommended.
